I remember when in History class I learned about the Roman Empire collapse. For some reason, today’s world situation reminds me of it. The more I look at what we’re going through as humanity, the more I keep thinking this might be the end of an era.
History is cyclical; that’s for sure. Therefore, the recent (heartbreaking) events shouldn’t surprise us. However, listening to speeches rooted on hate and white supremacy, convincing people that actions against other communities are fair, are still shocking. It truly concerns me every time I come across with media and social media messages twisting and shadow-banning reality.
I don’t understand why many leaders and communities are ignoring important chapters of recent history, like how the world turned upside down 80 – 90 years ago thanks to the persuasive power of the German man with a particular mustache.
Haven’t we learned anything about the repercussions of this kind of movements?! It seems the inertia of the cycle is stronger.
What feeds its power?
Besides the political and economic aspects of current affairs, I think it has to do with two primary emotions like fear and ambition, both growing fast due to an immense collective ignorance and selfishness. When we put them together in the same scenario, we end up believing that protecting ourselves means damaging “the others.”
There you have P*lest*ne and Isr*el, Uk*aine and Rus*ia; and the list can go on and on because issues like these also happen at a smaller scale; inside countries, communities, and even families.
In the end, the age-old propaganda strategy that has surrounded us forever amplifies of those emotions. Power structures feel the need to gain more power, attempting to impose their mindset, and so on. Wiping away any trace of love, respect, humility, and empathy. 💔
“Justice” can be interpreted in so many ways
As children, we’re told stories that shape our beliefs. These beliefs act as a filter through which we analyze everything as we grow up. So, it becomes natural to invalidate anyone who is or thinks different.
Eventually, you begin to see them as ‘enemies,’ influenced by the media’s portrayal of them as threats. Before you know it, you’re already filled with resentment, and from there, it’s easy to grow a desire to seek what you think is fair.
That’s the root cause of almost any conflict, a never-ending story that could actually end the world, or at least result in the end of an era.
Could moving into a new era solve the problem?
It would be great. However, it may only mean that the cycle is re-starting. I guess a more friendly or healthy environment depends on how we finished the previous one. Look at us now! Still carrying some resentments and consequences from problems that took place centuries ago.
Anyhow, I still feel hope every time I see people surprised and worried for those hate speeches, standing against war and torture, no matter the attacker, the political preference, or the place in the world where suffering is taking place. To me, that suggests there are still many people who don’t carry that much hate in their veins and would prioritize peace and respect above all else. How can we encourage more people to join this side?
